We’ve gone through how to prepare for a move before, but that was mainly concerned about what you should prepare to move out of a home. But what about the preparations should you make before you move into a new home? In part two of this series, we discuss how to prepare your new home before you move in.

Check out Pt. 1 of this series “How to Prepare for a Move”

Do a “Walk-through”
You have most likely done this before you even decided that you will move into your new home but it is a good idea to do it again. Why? Well, when you were looking for a new apartment or new house, your frame of mind was most likely focused on other things like if you like the layout, location etc.  This time you should walk through your home with the context of what you will be moving and where about you would like to put them.

It will help if you take pictures of your furniture and other items and take them with you to your new home and as you walk through the room so that you can already get an idea of where you would like to place what. This will also to help speed up the moving process the day of.

Clean
Sometimes your home will not be completely spotless before you move in and to help reduce some of the work after moving, you should clean your home before moving in. You are probably thinking, “Why would I want clean before moving in? Won’t it just get messy again when I move in?” If your moving company respects cleanliness they will use shoe covers and other items to make sure that your home will stay as clean as possible. Also, it is much easier to clean an empty home compared to one that is full of furniture and other items.

Plan to Organize
Another good thing to do before you move is to set up your closets, pantry or other storage areas before your clothes and other items arrive. This period of time, just like cleaning, is the easiest time to plan how you will organize the space as you do not have too many things in your way that may clutter your thinking.

Change Locks
This is not particularly related to the moving process but when you move into a new home, it is a good idea to make sure to change the locks. Landlords, previous tenants or owners, most likely will still have keys to the home. In order for your safety it’s best to change the locks before you move in.

Remove Distractions or Obstacles
Lastly, you should remove any distractions from your home before the moving day. Make sure your children or pets will not be in the way on the packing day, that way you can focus on your move. Also make sure that if possible, there are no obstacles that may get in the way of your movers or yourself to ensure safe and successful move.
