Life in China Made Easier: Chinese Driver License

If you have overseas Driver’s License, you want to change to Chinese driver's license, please follow the process below.
Information
A. General

  • Validity Period of Motor Vehicle Driver's License Note: Foreign driver's license "non-product description" needs to be specified by the following institutions for translation:
  • Shanghai SISU Corporation (No. 573 Chifeng Road, Hongkou District, Shanghai)
  • Shanghai City Foreign Affairs Translators' Association or (Room 1607, No. 1277 West Beijing Road, Jing an District, Shanghai)

B. Driver Identification

  • Within the validity period of the passport
  • Valid Chinese Visa - at least with an indication to stay for more than 90 days
  • Provisional Registration form

The Claiming Process

  • Submit relevant information.
  • Documentation, photographs, Medical Appointment, secure an exam date, and so on.
  • Take the exam, and if the examinee passed, he/she is considered qualified for driving in Shanghai. Otherwise, if not qualified, make an appointment date again.

Note: Overseas Country or Region for your Overseas Driver’s License issued in China has no effect; People of the Republic of China Traffic Safety Law specify: Motor Vehicle Driver’s License qualified by the Chinese Public Security, organizing the Traffic Management Departments, can be used to drive motor vehicle by the driver’s license holder in China.

A. File application form for Motor Vehicle Driver License
B. Medical Certificate
C. Applicant’s identification

  • Within the validity period at the passport
  • Valid visa or Residence permit for more than 3 months
  • Personal photos

Here are the steps of expired Shanghai driver's license replacement.
Information
A. A valid driver's license (Foreigners: Passport (must have a valid Chinese visa for 90 days) with Temporary accommodation registration form)
B. Valid identity and proof of residence:

  • Valid passport
  • Valid Chinese Visa – valid for at least 90 days
  • Temporary Residence Registration form for persons outside Shanghai.

Handling conditions

  • Motor vehicle driver's license should satisfy the “within ninety days (90 days) validity period or less than one year”.
  • In no case the driver's license be exchanged.

A. Physical attributes does not meet the conditions of having a driving permit.
B. Consciousness of road traffic safety violations.
C. The 12 points scoring in a 1 year cycle, in relation to violations of road traffic safety laws, regulations and related knowledge education in the examination should be kept in mind.
D. Since, if a driver’s license holder came to a point where a cumulative 0point out of 12, in accordance with the provisions of the road traffic safety violations procedures for handling, 1) detention or 2) cancellation of driver's license can be the punishment.

  • A replacement of the driver's license in Shanghai: Valid passport (visa be valid for more than 90 days), temporary residence registration form.
